Sustainability
The Grand River Convention Center is dedicated to being the best facility for our clients, staff, and community. We focus on using resources responsibly and helping our customers achieve their sustainability goals for meetings and conventions. This commitment forms the foundation of our sustainability program.
01
Agave Straws
The Grand River Center has phased out plastic straws in favor of eco-friendly agave straws, which offer a sustainable alternative. These straws are not only better for the environment, but they are also fully compostable in our on-site composting unit, contributing to our ongoing commitment to reducing waste and promoting environmental stewardship.
02
Recycling Program
Our convention center is equipped with strategically placed recycling stations throughout the venue, designed to support our recycling program.
03
Microgreen System
In collaboration with students from Wahlert High School, ReEvolution Farms, and with support from a sustainability grant provided by the City of Dubuque, the Grand River Center has installed an innovative micro garden system in our kitchen. This unique system allows our culinary team to cultivate a diverse array of herbs and vegetables, blending aesthetics, sustainability, and functionality to enhance the freshness and quality of our guest-facing kitchen offerings. This initiative reflects our dedication to fostering local partnerships and promoting sustainable practices within our operations.
04
Composting
In the summer of 2024, our convention center launched a comprehensive composting program that transforms food scraps and other organic materials into nutrient-rich compost. By implementing this initiative, we’ve significantly reduced waste disposal costs, streamlined our waste management processes, and reinforced our commitment to sustainability, making a positive impact both locally and beyond.
06
Water Bottle Refilling Stations
Guests attending events at our venue can easily refill and reuse water bottles at our strategically placed refill stations. This small change makes a big impact, showcasing our commitment to a greener and more sustainable future.
05
Food Donations
In collaboration with event organizers, we make sure that surplus food, promotional items, and event supplies don’t go to waste by donating them to local organizations.
07
Green Purchasing
The food and beverage department emphasizes sourcing locally grown and baked goods, and it also provides vegetarian meal options, as vegetables require less land and energy to produce.
