OUR STORY
On the banks of the Mississippi River, Grand River Center is a beautiful limestone and glass structure featuring strikingly modern lines that complement the traditional architecture of the surrounding area.
A special feature, the undulating roofline, reflects the river itself. The city of Dubuque had considered pursuing a state-of-the-art education and conference facility for nearly a decade but lacked funding. Through progressive thinking, unique partnerships and the creation of the Vision Iowa funding, through the State of Iowa, the dream has become a reality.
The state legislature created Vision Iowa funding to address two districts needs in Iowa. First, improve quality of life by creating venues that increase education, recreation and entertainment choices to attract and retain young people. Second, increase opportunities for tourism. The Grand River Center, as part of America’s River, addresses both of those needs. America’s River project received $40 million in Vision Iowa funds and was the state’s first recipient.
Grand River Center planning began with a Design Review Committee comprised of representatives from the City of Dubuque and other partner organizations. The committee worked directly with the architects and designers to develop the space needs and layout of the building, to select materials and colors and to ensure the facility was located in a manner that showcases the stunning views of the Mississippi River. The central spine of the building also provides a direct line of sight to the landmark gold dome on top of the Dubuque County Courthouse. The results are spectacular and indicate the level of commitment and care that went into each decision.
The three-story Grand River Center provides breath-taking views of the Mississippi River and the Tri-State area. The center features an 86,000 square foot conference and meeting facility which includes a 30,000 square foot exhibit hall, a 12,000 square foot ballroom and six meeting rooms. On the third floor, the River Room is an all-glass enclosure with a balcony jutting over the Riverwalk, which allows the sensation of floating over the river.
The Grand River Center opened in November 2003 and was the final phase of Dubuque’s America’s River Project. The center sits on the bank of the Mississippi River next to the Grand Harbor Resort and the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium.
The Grand River Center has won eight “Best of the Midwest” awards for meetings.
